Wastewater PLC5 – To ControlLogix Upgrade

Project Scope: Matrix Technologies completed a project upgrading a nine (9) panel PLC5 network with remote I/O to a single enclosure CLX panel for a chemical company. Matrix Technologies created and provided Process Flow Diagrams, along with upgrading existing HMIs from PanelView 1400e to PanelView+ 1250. Portions of the FactoryTalk Suite were also used, including Machine Edition and Site Edition.

The installation of the upgrade was done in eight (8) phases to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the equipment, while imposing the smallest possible downtime on the facility. The stages led to a total of around twelve (12) hours dispersed in three (3) four-hour increments, and one (1) full day of shutdown. Over the course of these shutdowns, strategic portions of the setup were done, culminating in a relatively short startup process. By dispersing the downtime as much as possible, the customer avoided falling too far behind on production and led to a clean transition.

Engineering Challenges: Multiple phases and several changes in schedule made the successful completion difficult.
